Leadership Academy FAQs

  • + - What is the Leadership Academy on Ending Homelessness?

The Leadership Academy on Ending Homelessness combines expert instruction with interactive discussions for emerging and established leaders, offering mission-driven individuals a unique opportunity for personal and professional development.

All participants work through the same core material together, creating shared learning experiences. The program also includes opportunities for informal conversations, so leaders can connect, share ideas and learn from one another beyond the scheduled sessions.

  • + - How is the Leadership Academy different from Advance to Zero Learning Sessions or the Summit?

The Leadership Academy is a specialist leadership development program, not a standard AtoZ event. While AtoZ Learning Sessions and the national Summit are designed for AtoZ community participation, the Academy targets current and emerging leaders who are driving efforts to end homelessness locally or nationally, and not just from an AtoZ perspective (i.e. starting with rough sleeping).

  • + - Who should attend the Leadership Academy?

The Leadership Academy is designed for anyone who plays a role in leading their organisation’s or community’s efforts to end homelessness. That leadership can take many forms – from guiding an entire organisation or policy area, to shaping funding decisions, delivering services, leading communications or coordinating planning and collaboration.

Both current and emerging leaders have found the Academy’s content and discussions to be of great value. Even experienced leaders who are already skilled at setting a vision and driving change have found the focus on ending homelessness to be a fresh and practical perspective.

You don’t need to have ‘leader’ in your title to take part. Past participants have included CEOs, program and policy directors, government officers, operations supervisors, advocates with lived experience and volunteer organisers.

  • + - What content will be covered?

The Leadership Academy provides an opportunity to examine how each person leads themselves, how they lead other people and how they lead within a system context. A full program will be released in the coming weeks, but some of the topics that will be covered include:

    • Distinguishing leadership from management
    • Understanding your personal mission and motivation to lead
    • Seeking alignment of people to the mission
    • Allyship and diversity on teams
    • Developing a teachable point of view
    • Clear and compelling vision to influence and inform advocacy
    • Influencing teams
    • Self-care for leaders.
  • + - Who is the facilitator?

Iain De Jong is the founder of the Leadership Academy, the author of The Book on Ending Homelessness and the President & CEO of OrgCode Consulting Inc. Iain has over three decades experience in the sector in various leadership positions and is an ongoing advisor and coach to various leaders in government and non-profits.

  • + - How many people will be in attendance?

To ensure the event is as interactive as possible, the size of the event is capped at approximately 100 people.

  • + - Is accommodation included in the ticket price?

Accommodation is not included in the ticket price, but some venues are offering discounted rates on accommodation for Academy attendees.

  • + - Are there discounts for Advance to Zero (AtoZ) communities?

The Leadership Academy is a separate program with a different focus and audience to AtoZ events. While AAEH continues to support AtoZ communities through other initiatives, community discounts are not available for this event.

  • + - Are there discounts for regional or remote attendees?

At this stage, regional and remote discounts are not offered for the Leadership Academy. However, we are always looking for sponsors to help with this sort of thing – if you are interested or know someone who might be, get in touch (info@aaeh.org.au).

  • + - Is there support available for people with lived experience of homelessness to attend?

Yes. An Expression of Interest (EOI) process will open soon for participants with lived experience of homelessness to attend the Academy.

  • + - Will there be more information available soon?

Yes. We’ll continue to update this page with new details about the program, speakers and lived experience EOI process.

  • + - Are you still looking for sponsors?

Yes, this will help us make the event as accessible and impactful as possible. Please get in touch at info@aaeh.org.au.
